Designblok 2026

Remnant is a new collection shaped by fresh wood, fire and the traces left by time and process.

Fresh wood is allowed to warp, crack and darken under fire. These traces are not flaws to erase, but the identity of each object.

This year’s collection, REMNANT, grew out of a fascination with the traces that time, fire and the making process leave behind in a material. I work with fresh wood, which changes naturally as it dries: it warps, cracks and loses its original shape. These transformations are an essential part of each finished object.

Fire as a Tool

This year I worked more intensively with fire as a creative tool. It does more than treat the surface. It becomes an active force that reveals the character of the wood and creates strong contrasts between light and dark.

In the context of this year’s Designblok theme, “Light,” I’m drawn to the paradox of fire: light born from a flame also takes light away from the surface of the wood, leaving a dark mark behind.

On some objects, fire is applied only to the outside or only to the inside of the vessel, creating a striking visual contrast between light and dark surfaces. The play of light, shadow, structure and depth is one of the main motifs of the whole collection.

Imperfection as Identity

The choice of material matters just as much. This year, too, I worked with pieces of wood that stand out for their cracks, knots and deformations. Instead of suppressing these flaws, I chose to emphasise them even more. Each object gains its own unrepeatable identity.

Why Designblok Matters to Me

Last year’s Designblok presentation was a particularly strong moment for me. I was surprised by how immediate visitors’ reactions were. Contact with natural material keeps an extraordinary power even in today’s digital environment. Seeing wood up close and sensing its structure gave many people a feeling of closeness.

REMNANT is a collection about the traces that remain: in the material, in the process and in ourselves.
